Copper Toxicity - Lotus Life

Aloha cherished Friends & Guests,

Have you heard of Copper toxicity? I know I hadn’t until I witnessed a relative have a severe reaction. I was blown away at how quickly it came on and how sick she had gotten. It made me wonder what foods had copper in it and could cause this type of reaction, was I also at risk at having this reaction to high copper foods? I think it is always worth it to figure out how to prevent illnesses and live a healthier lifestyle.

A question you may be asking yourself right now could be what foods are high in Copper? I know I went home and did a quick Google© and YouTube©  search to better shield my own health with as much knowledge as possible. Here is what came about from a little research (watch YouTube video here), my relative as I mentioned got sick after eating Indian food for dinner. What was it about Indian food that could have high Copper? Chickpeas turns out to have a very high Copper content! I am friends with a few vegans and chickpeas is used in a lot of their daily food intake, such as humus. These other foods contain a high Copper content as well: almonds, cashews, kale and avocado. All of which are in my weekly eating habits.

After conducting my research and rethinking what I had gotten at dinner that night, which we had ordered the same dish, vegetable korma, it is made with chick peas and hence the copper toxicity reaction.  Luckily I haven’t had the same reaction and haven’t to any of the foods I just listed. What really surprised me is how closely fibromyalgia is tied to Copper levels. Someone with fibromyalgia that eats food high in Copper will experience this severe reaction I’ve been discussing, fibromyalgia flares up with Copper toxicity. It will feel similar to the flu; fatigue, muscle aches, foggy brain... fun fact it also sounds similar to how I felt going through chemo. It is one of the worst feelings to experience and to not know what causes someone to feel that ill is scary. It is horrible how quickly it happens and how sick you will feel when you have a severe reaction to Copper toxicity. This is a real issue that a lot of people are not aware of.

Now that you know what foods are highest in Copper and what the symptoms are you might also be interested to know the best ways to treat Copper toxicity. When there is a high Copper content it is because Metallothionein is not functioning how it should be, to counter balance this taking Metallothionein will help with the Copper toxicity as well as lots of water and rest!

It is amazing to me how much research and cures are being developed to help with severe medical issues such as this. It is difficult to feel this awful and not know the reasons why, the feeling of helplessness and perhaps overthinking what could be wrong and second guessing yourself. For me, half the battle is knowing what is wrong and then finding the best way to feel better is the only focus. Perhaps reading this will give you power once again in your own health and help you identify what could be wrong if you don’t feel well after eating foods with high copper. Please, don’t self diagnose yourself though, reach out to your doctor and have a conversation about how you are feeling, and see what other ways you can prevent any flare ups.

Keep Smiling,

Melissa Soria

Thanks Melissa. Great job. Everyone should also know that copper has been found at the base of trigger points. Interesting right?  We don’t think fibromyalgia is so much a copper toxicity as it is a copper metallothionein dysfunction caused by some deficiency and tied to genetics somehow (runs in families as it does my wife’s). We used a mild shotgun approach to address those possible deficiencies in the metallothionein (no way to really test for those type of microscopic deficiencies so we just “shotgun” it). Eventually all the symptoms go away, and the fibro patient gets better (as in no symptoms). This is not a cure, just an abatement – we can’t cure it because we think it is genetic at its base.

Some patients take 3-4 Copper Conform and some take 8-10 when they have a flare up (from no symptoms to a 9 or 10 pain wise when they eat the wrong foods – such as chick peas. They also massively increase their VARS Glutathione to help with metallothionein dysfunction and detox (reduced glutathione makes up a third of the metallothionein by molecular weight). Then once again the symptoms get under control. A constant battle until they learn what foods they can cannot eat.

Hope this helps.
